3 Point Formative Assessment

On a professional development workshop by Marie Alcock (@mariealcock), I was recently introduced to the 3 Point Formative Assessment tool. It is so good, I just have to share it. The 3PFA incorporates two key elements of any unit, reflection and agency.

As the name would suggest, it contains three carefully planned parts.

Part 1 - Criteria/Learning Outcomes

The first part contains the learning outcomes that are being assessed. These may be knowledge, skills, attitudes or any part of the curriculum, you want the students to reflect on and make a plan to improve in. Below are some samples. This part of the assessment is usually assessed individually by the teacher with the student.

Part 2 - Reflection

This is the reflection part of the the assessment. Here the student has the opportunity to self assess where they are currently in relation to the learning outcome and decide what they need to learn.
Part 3 - Agency

Agency includes voice, choice and ownership. This part of the 3 point formative assessment tool allows students to chose how they will learn. The teacher provides a selection of learning engagements, for the student to choose from.

I hope this simple but effective formative assessment tool is useful. Keep learning!
